Zumbarons
Zumbarons...
What do you think Zumbarons are?…NOPE, it is not related to zumba. In fact, it has nothing to do with fitness!
For those who are unfamiliar with zumbarons….let me introduce you to one of Australia’s famous dessert chefs - Adriano Zumbo.
He was known for the chef who introduced croquembouche (a French dessert consisting of choux pastry balls piled into a cone and bound with threads of caramel) to Australia through one of the episodes for masterchef Australia. Hence, the name Adriano Zumbo, when mentioned in masterchef series…..there will be an “oh no” moment as everyone knows that the competitors will be up for a technical challenge that when you take a look at the dessert you will probably go “How on earth are they going to replicate that ?”
So, if you ever get a chance to go to Melbourne or Sydney, do look out for Adriano Zumbo Patissier. I do recommend it and I think it is worth to go and grab some desserts.
I went to Sydney to visit a friend and went to get some of the popular macarons of Adriano Zumbo’s at Manly (which unfortunately that branch has been closed). At that time, I was craving for good macarons after i received a box of Laduree macarons for my birthday all the way from France, flown in and handed over by a good friend of mine. So after such a smackingly delicious treat, I went all over Perth to find a similar tasting macaron but could not find one that satisfied me. That was the reason why I decided to try Adriano Zumbo’s when I flew over to Sydney hoping that the macarons there will be able to give me that same happy experience that I had with Laduree. When I went to Adriano Zumbo’s at Manly, I thought to myself “very odd flavours but looks interesting”. Bear in mind this was back in 2011. They had Asian flavours if I can correctly remember. Among the flavours that I remembered buying were satay, pandan and black sesame. I did not know what to expect from Asian flavoured macarons but I was blown away when I tasted the macarons. The kind of reaction that made my eyes go round and big accompanied with that surprised look on my face. Yumm….
And recently, I went to Melbourne and decided that I had to get the macarons for my cousins and family. So i went to Emporium Melbourne and was served by a friendly staff so no complaints on that.
As usual, the macarons have interesting flavours although I cannot exactly remember them now. They have the right crispiness for the crust and yet still moist and soft on the inside. I do realised as well that the flavours played an important part as well apart from the light and crisp crust. Some macarons depend heavily on flavourings. Normally, for a good macaron, you can really taste the flavour like as if you are eating the fruit/nut/whatever the flavour was supposed to be. Also, it has a good balance of sweetness. I think no words can describe exactly how good macarons are supposed to taste like. So, the only way to know good macarons will be to taste them from recommended good stores/chefs.
With having Adriano Zumbo Patissier in Sydney and Melbourne, I am quite happy although they do not have any branch in Perth but at least they are a lot closer to home than France. So, Adriano Zumbo Patissier is a thumbs up for me.
